The name Amelia has a German root of amal meaning work and industriousness towards abundance. The first woman to make a solo flight over the Atlantic Ocean, Amelia Earhart (1897-1937). This was merely one accomplishment after years of courage and perseverance in aviation. Amelia Jenks Bloomer was an American women's rights and temperance advocate. Even though she did not create the women's clothing reform style known as bloomers, her name became associated with it because of her early and strong advocacy.
